The Values of The Ten Commandments - Commitment

And God spoke all these words: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. "You shall have no other gods before me. "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

The second commandment – You shall not make for yourself an idol.

Today I want to share with you about the second commandment – Commitment.

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The word “offer” means an action that is “one and for all”. Commitment happens once and it’s all the time that comes after, it is to do all you can! Let us listen to a story.

Michelangelo lived an incredible life. Possibly the greatest artist of Western civilization – and certainly the most influential – he was born to sculpt. He sculpted his first mature masterpiece at age twenty-one. He completed his Pietà and David before age thirty.

In his early thirties, Michelangelo was summoned to Rome by Pope Julius 11 to sculpt a magnificent papal tomb, but was then asked to work on a painting project instead. At first Michelangelo wanted to refuse, having no desire to paint a dozen figures on the ceiling of a small chapel in the Vatican. Though as a boy he had been trained to paint, his passion was sculpture. But when the Pope pressed him, he reluctantly accepted the assignment.

Scholars believe Michelangelo’s rivals pushed for him to get the job, hoping he would refuse it and lose favor with the Pope, or take it and discredit himself. But once Michelangelo accepted the assignment, he thoroughly committed himself to it, expanding the project from a simple depiction of the twelve apostles to include more than four hundred figures and nine scenes from the book of Genesis.

For four grueling years, the artist lay on his back painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. And he paid a great price. The work permanently damaged his eyesight and wore him down. Michelangelo said, “After four tortured years, more than four hundred over-life-sized figures, I felt as old and as weary as Jeremiah. I was only thirty-seven, yet friends did not recognize the old man I had become.”

The impact of Michelangelo’s commitment was far-reaching. He pleased his benefactor, the Pope, and received other commissions from the Vatican. But more important, he made a huge impact in the artistic community.

Undoubtedly Michelangelo’s talent created the potential for greatness, but without commitment, his influence would have been minimal. That level of commitment could be seen in his attention to the fine details as well as the overarching vision. When asked why he was working so diligently on a dark corner of the Sistine Chapel that no one would ever see, Michelangelo’s simple reply was, “God will see”.
Commitment is closely related to holding on. One will not be holding on if one is not committed. When we talk about commitment, there are 4 types of people in this world:

Coward: These people do not have an exact target and never want to commit. I call these people the wandering spirits.

Hesitator: These people are not sure whether they are able to hit their target and thus slowing down their pace not wanting to commit.

Giving-up-halfway: These people are already on the runway running towards their goal but give up once an obstacle arose.

The winner: Only a handful of people would set a target and stay committed to it and not braced through all the difficulties until the day he or she succeeds.

Which type of person are you?

There’s a person called Raphael Solano was searching for diamond along a coast. He kept on picking up the stones one by one until it eventually reached the 999,999th stone then he decided to give up. But his partner urged him to just pick up one more to collect all together a million stones. And guess what, the 1,000,000th stone was The Liberator. It was the biggest and clearest diamond ever found by man. It is 155 karat.

A phrase goes like this, commitment is the enemy of adversity because it urges you to keep holding on and no matter how many times you may fall, commitment helps you to get up again.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.

In here, Jesus told us to carry the cross and follow Him. Do not make an idol for yourself and making yourself the center of the life. Instead, carry your destiny and dream. It is not for your fame or desire, but for the vision of cultural mandare, choose to commit and not giving up easily. You will one day realise God has prepared a reward that is better than you can ever think of!

Are You a Kisser or a Cleaver?

Pastor Kong’s last session in last Tuesday had impacted me deeply, letting me to have a deeper understanding towards loyalty. I think this sermon is great, thus during the youth service, I used the same scripture and contents to share about loyalty in a simpler way. I really hope they can capture the essence of this value.

I believe everyone have heard of this song called “Kiss Goodbye”. What is kiss goodbye? It means you say bye bye right after a kiss.

Let us look at the words of God, in Ruth 1:1 and v6.

Ruth 1:1 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

Ruth 1:6 When she heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, Naomi and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.

Who was born in Bethlehem? It was the place that Jesus was born at, a holy city. Bethlehem means God’s bread. It’s a rice nation, a rice city, it’s a place full of harvest. But it met a great famine, many people were starved to death. Hence at that time, a person named Elimelech brought his wife, Naomi and two sons to leave Bethlehem and moved to a place called Moab. Moab is a place full of idols like the India of current days. In India, there are abouto 3 billion types of god. It was impossible for one to see, worship, talk about all of them, because there are simply too many of them! Moab is a place like that.

(3 Billion indian gods & goddesses)

They moved there for the sake of their stomach due to the famine happened in Bethlehem. But it was not all good. After some times there, Elimelech and his two sons died. Remained were his wife, Naomi. Naomi had two daughters in laws. The first one named Orpah and the other named Ruth.

In verse 6, Naomi heard that their hometown, Bethlehem experienced a great miracle from God, that there was now a great harvest, full of crops and foods. So Naomi had the urge to go back to her own place because it was not as safe and convenient as it was in a foreign land. But Naomi’s two daughter-in-law, Orpah and Ruth were not believers of God. They were worshippers of idols. Naomi told them to stay in Moab because they could have a new life in Moab, remarrying a new husband and continue to live on with their properties. After kissing them, Naomi turned and wanted to leave. Sure, all 3 of them were crying and hugging each other tightly because they were really bonded with each other. Naomi also couldn’t bear to leave them, but even after all the crying, Naomi insisted them to stay back instead of following her back to Bethlehem and leading a poorer life there.

Let’s see what happened in verse 14

Ruth 1:14 At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.

After Orpah kissed her, she bid her good bye. Did she love Naomi? Yes. But why? Because firstly, if Orpah were to go back, she might be unable to look for a new husband and she’s growing older as days passed by. If she were to stay, there might be a lot of chance, because after all, she’s a local there. Secondly, Bethlehem is a place that believes in Jesus. If she were to follow them, she would have to worship. How if she couldn’t get used to it or didn’t like it? She also thought about serving her old now-widow mother-in-law. It was such a pain in the neck. If she stayed in Moab, she wouldn’t have to be treated like a servant, there was no need to serve her mother-in-law anymore. She thought a lot about it. But Ruth was a total contrast. Ruth clung unto Naomi and wanted to leave together with Naomi.

Let us look at verse 15 to 17

Ruth 1:15 "Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her."
Ruth 1:16 But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.
Take note of verse 17,

Ruth 1:17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me."

This was what Ruth said to Naomi, it’s very touching, it’s a great representation of loyalty. Today, we can no longer find loyalty in our life. Do you think your friends are you are 100% loyal to you? I’m 27 year old, and up to this day, except those in church, I can’t find a friend that is 100% loyal to me. You might think how hard could it be. If a person punched me once, I would have 10 friends that would stand up and help me to punch the person back. If a person scolded me, I only need to tell my buddies that then they would help me to settled the person. This life of “brotherhood loyalty” isn’t foreign to me either. But if the other party was holding a knife or a gun and all you had was a stick, do you think those 10 friends would still stick to you. They might not be. Many times when 2 persons just got attached with each other, there would be lots of promises and vows. But after 3 months, you couldn’t find them existing anymore. Do you think this is true loyalty? Loyalty is now worthless in the society. Due to the monetary temptation, there are a lot of lawsuits of family property dispute. Mother with the son, or between brothers etc. Even family members could turn into enemies due to the lawsuit, do you think your friend are totally loyal to you? I’m not saying that you should not keep any friends, but it is true that loyalty doesn’t worth anything now. And so the Bible keeps telling us to be a loyal person. It is not easy but we got to learn it and only with loyalty that we will be able to impact the others.

Why is loyalty so important? Look at the first commandment among the Ten Commandments. “You shall have no God before me.” Ten Commandments are 10 different values. Why does God talk about loyalty since the first commandment? Because the remaining 9 characters and values are all built on the foundation of loyalty. In other words, loyalty is the foundation of our growth of characters. You might still be able to do great works and expand your business largely without loyalty, but once there is a problem, when there is a challenge, all the things that you have built up might be destroyed to nothing. The reason behind this is there is the absence of loyalty. We were just doing things to please each other instead of doing it sincerely. So once there is a problem, it might set off an argue and then you would wonder what went wrong and why would things come out this way. The answer is really simple. Because you are not loyal as well as the other party. Disloyalty brings forth destruction.

Ask yourself now, is loyalty important?

If you want to be successful, then you will have to learn to be someone loyal. Be loyal to God, your pastor, your leader, your cellgroup, your studies, your career, your family and everything else. How do we be loyal? Let’s look at the first point.

I’ll go wherever you go.
This is the first phrase that Ruth said. Where Naomi goes, she will go. She didn’t know what was ahead and not knowing if she would have to starve. The people at Bethlehem that time despised foreigners, Ruth might not be able to have a good life there because she wouldn’t have any identity. But she chose to follow Naomi. She chose to follow her till the end no matter what happens. There are 2 persons who are like Ruth in the Bible. The first one is Abraham. Abraham was very wealthy and he had a lot of properties. But God told Abraham to leave where he was. God didn’t say where, but Abraham, in his elder age, obeyed God to leave without asking any further. There was another person named Elisha. Elisha followed Elijah once he was being called. Many times, Elijah told Elisha to stop following him. He repeated it again and again. But Elisha continued to follow Elisha wherever he went. After this test, Elijah clothed Elisha with his cloak and Elisha obtained a double portion of anointing from Elijah. Elijah did 7 great miracles, and Elisha did 14 of them. This is called clinging unto closely. Young people, sometimes when your leader asked you to do something, you might not get it. But being a cleaver means even if you don’t get it, you would still follow what your leader said.

I’ll stay wherever you stay.
Staying connected means following closely too. No matter what happened, even if you stay in a muddy place, I will stay there. Be it under a bridge or next to a rubbish dump, I will be where you are. We got to have a close relationship with our church. Do you know what are we doing in church now? If you don’t, you have to get it clear. For an example, we have to pray for our church, visit our church website, sign up a Facebook account and stay connected with Ps. Kong, Sun, Ps George and all the church leaders and members. Following closely to what the church pastor and leaders want to do and supporting them unconditionally.

Your people will be my people, your God will be my God.
It says here, your vision shall be my vision, your dream shall be my dream. It means in this big family, we are not building our own kingdom or what we want. The purpose for us being here is to build what our pastor and leader want, we have to help them to accomplish their dreams. When we are doing so, God will help us to build our dream and vision. This is a principle. If the purpose of you to lead a cellgroup and be very caring to your cellgroup members is to make them respect you or to the let the whole world know you, then I’m sorry to tell you that all you’re doing is equal to nothing. Even if you might seem really successful, but once a storm comes, all your accomplishment would be destroyed and you might even leave church because what you’ve been doing is for yourself instead of for the church.Today, if you make your pastor’s vision yours, you wouldn’t be preoccupied, you wouldn’t get grouchy because of a little mishaps. You know what you are doing now is laying down a foundation for your pastor’s vision and so it is a joy to be able to serve.

Where you die, I’ll die.
I’ll ask you all a simple question, will you die for pastor? If there was a bullet shooting towards pastor, would you think twice before jumping over ahead of him or you would do that instantly? We all are pastor’s personal FBI that are suppose to protect him. What should we do if someone said something bad about our pastor? We should not only stop them, but we should retort to the person. Being neutral also means being disloyal. Pastor Kong said, you might not like what our church is doing, you might think that you come to church for love, not to go out from the four walls and love the others, it’s too troublesome, etc. It does not matter then, there are more churches out there that suit you better. If you can’t follow pastor’s vision, then never mind, it’s not that you are not good, it’s only because you are not suitable for this church, you can be transferred to another church. Young people, we must be loyal to our pastor’s vision.

Today, Jesus is looking for a person, a boy and a girl, He wants to look for someone that's loyal. You know what, there's a person named Peter in the Bible. Did peter love Jesus? Yes, he loved Jesus very much. He's committed to Jesus. He's the eldest brother among all because he was the first to be called by Jesus. But the one who denied Jesus 3 times was also Peter. Peter told Jesus that he would never betrayed Him. But Jesus said before the cock cawed, he would deny Jesus for 3 times. Peter wouldn't believe it. But after it happened, Peter really did denied Jesus for 3 times. When Peter did this, he was being disloyal to Jesus. His life slipped into total darkness. He was sad, guilty and oppressed in life. He even went back to his old job of being a fisherman. His destiny, as well as the relationship with Jesus were destroyed. It was all because of his disloyalty.

Today, if you were being disloyal to Jesus and the church, this relationship will be destroyed. The devild tempted Adam and Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is to instill the seed of disloyalty into them, because he knew it can destroy the relationship between God and people. But Jesus came, and reconciled our relationship with God through his life and blood.

It's the same, before Jesus rose to Heaven, He went to look for Peter at the seashore. He sat unto the boat together with him to catch the fish. He even baked the fish for Peter. The reason Jesus did this was to remind Peter of how he used to follow Him. He wanted Peter to remember His calling to Peter, as well as the first love and the heart of loyalty. Peter started to understand why Jesus asked Peter thrice that if he loved Him. It was because Peter denied Him for 3 times. When Jesus first asked him, do you love me? Peter said yes. At the same time, the previous betrayal and the oppression within him started to set loose. Second time, Jesus asked again, do you love me? Peter replied yes, he does. When Peter said this, another chain was broken because the second time of Peter's betrayal was forgiven. The third time, Jesus asked Peter again, do you love me? Peter started to get impatient and said, yes, Jesus, I really, really love you.

Jesus mentioned 3 levels of love here, one is deeper than another. The last love that Jesus mentioned is Agape love. In other words, Jesus was asking Peter if he would love Him unconditionally? When Peter answered yes, he loved Jesus, his life was renewed again. Jesus had to do so because He needs to pass over a great responsibility to someone on earth, and that person was the one who were to develop the first church in the world. But Jesus chose someone that had betrayed Him for 3 times. It shows that Jesus is totally loyal. Jesus told Peter that He wants to build His church upon a rock. And that rock (petra) means Jesus Christ. But at that time, Jesus changed Peter’s name to Peter that means little rocks (petros), it means He was passing the responsibility and command to build a church to Peter. Even though Peter had denied Jesus for 3 times, but Jesus never forgets His promise to him. He never forgets the destiny He put in Peter. So Jesus used a lot of ways creative ways to win Peter’s loyalty back. The purpose is to renew this responsibility back to Peter and to let him know that Jesus never regrets his calls. Jesus said to Peter, as long as you’re loyal and willing to repent, I will still use you. Peter finally became the pastor of the largest church in the world. He won 100,000 persons in Jerusalem among the population of 200,000. It means half of the population believed in Jesus. And because of Jerusalem, 1/3 of the population in the world now are Christian.

Young people, God values your destiny. Jesus is always loyal to you. He always remembers that. The problem is whether you can be like Peter, who came to Jesus and said, yes, Jesus, I love you and there’s no regret. Jesus will too, ask you, do you love me?

What do you want to be? A kisser or a cleaver?

I’m not useless

There was a joke:

On a cold windy night, a young man was walking home.

It was pitch dark and he couldn’t see a hole in front and unfortunately, he dropped into it accidentally.

He used up all the strength he had, trying to climb out of it, but it was to no avail.

After a while, there came a drunk old man, having the same fortune, dropped into the hole.

He was also trying hard to get out from it.

Then the young man looked at the old man, had an idea to pull a prank at him. He walked near to the old man, and with a low-pitched, ghostly voice, he said:

“Hey, stop wasting your energy, I’ve climbed it all my life and still couldn’t make it. Just forget about getting out and accompany me here. Hehehe.”

But surprisingly, this old man got out from the hole instantly.

In fact, the old man thought that there was a ghost, under panic, he used up all the strength he had, tried all he can and managed to get out from it.

Haha!

I believe everyone have heard of a Chinese idiom that says “a panicking dog jumps over the wall”. Dogs can’t jump over a wall, but only when it’s an emergency.

Likewise, be it human or animal, we have an immeasurable potential inside us. When it’s being exploded, it's greater than what we could think of.

We need the consciousness to trigger our potential.

The title today is – I’m not useless.

Why am I not useless? This is what we could ask ourselves.

Or we would tell ourselves that nobody around us gave us any assurance, am I really not useless?

Can I really succeed? I want to tell you, YOU SURELY CAN!

Which one do you think is more important – how God looks at you, or how people look at you?

We need to understand 3 truths:

God is our beginning

In Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Notice that here it says, He is the beginning.

Thus, the starting out our life is from the God who created heaven and earth.

In school, science teaches us that we are evolved from the ape. This is a wrong idea!

We’re not evolved from an animal, our ancestor isn’t an ape.

Because we do not have any ape’s habit in us.

Do you want to be like him?

OR HIM?

Both you and I are creatively created.

We are made in HEAVEN. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. (Ps 139:14)

The starting of our life is not from our parents, God says:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (Jer 1:5)

Yes, you were born from your mother’s womb, but the DNA in your blood do not only come from your parents, not only from the ancestor, you have another source of ancestor, it’s from God.

Because the starting of your life is from God.

And this DNA is also the one that gave birth to Jesus Christ, the DNA of a champion, a winner’s DNA!

You have the bloodline of a champion, so from this day onward, you will lead a victorious life.

Gen 2:7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Here it says God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”

God transfers his breath to us, breath can represent life.

Life consists of the DNA inherited from our ancestor.

Thus, if you know that you have God’s DNA in you, would you still think that you are insignificant and unworthy?

God gives us the power to succeed

Gen 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Here it says , blessed which means God gave us the power to succeed.

We are called to be a successful and influential person.

God’s purpose for us is to reign and rule instead of to assist.

Since we are made this way, we shall have the power to achieve it.

God has given us this power so we can fulfill the destiny of our lives. Do not look down on yourself.

We are all not useless, there are various hidden potentials in us, whether it is being explore or not, they are almost uncountable.

We have a treasure in our lives.

2 Cor 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

We all have a treasure in our life.

Do you know that…

The most pitiful people on earth are the ones that do not have a dream,
the most regretted people are those who did not explore their potentials,
and the place with most treasures are at the graveyard.

There is an unlimited potential in you.

You may doubt or deny this power, you might say you are unable to get anything done, you do not know anything, but, what you do not know does not mean you do not have. They are just yet to be explored.

It is like when we were just born, we do not know about our five senses, but it does not mean that they do not exist.

How are you going to explore and realize your hidden potentials?

You gotta see yourself from another perspective.

We often look at ourselves from a wrong perspective, we magnify our weaknesses and incapability.

What matters most is how you perceive yourself.

What came to your mind when you saw this glass?

What do you see? A half full or half empty glass?

The optimist sees the cup half full; the pessimist sees the cup half empty.

The way you look at this glass of water determines the value of this glass of water to you.

How you perceive yourself, is how others will perceive you.

Choose not to stay in your comfort zone.

Many of us are stuck in a rut
because we simply stop moving out of our comfort zone and receptive to change.
Nevertheless, you have to step out to experience something new.

In the bible, when Moses passed away, Joshua needed to lead the Israelites into Canaan.

There are many unknown, Joshua had never experienced what he faced.

Though young at age, not equipped with any army knowledge or experience on war field,

But Joshua chose to walk out from his comfort zone, which leads to the explosion of his hidden potentials.

He did not only lead the Israelites to trash their enemies, he eventually got the land of honey and milk.

Besides, in the Bible, during a night with strong winds and heavy rain, Jesus commanded one of his disciples, Peter to walk on the water. He decided to take a step out and managed to walk on the water.

When Peter walked on the water, there were other 2 disciples on the boat, they too, had the potential to walk on the water, but why was it that only Peter did it?

Because he took a step out.

Likewise, if you want to walk on water, you have to step out from your boat.
You have far greater potential than you've ever imagined.

Many people left the world with their treasures. They let fear, inferiority and obstacles stopped them from stepping out. But you do not want to be such person.

Because your hidden potentials are at an amount that you could never imagine. You can climb higher than you imagined. You have talents that are yet to be explored. You have anointing that you have yet to put into use.

You only have to look at yourself from another angle, choose to leave your comfort zone, the result itself might bring surprise to you.

Tell yourself, you're a champion!

Winners are not those who never fail; but those who never quit!

Do your best, young lads! You are not useless!!
